Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are illogical in terms of everything that has preceded them.

The term was coined when the main character (Fonzie) of an ever popular sitcom called 'Happy Days' had been written in the script to jump over a shark, growing worse in quality since.

According to many fans, That 70's Show did this after Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher left the show before the 8th season.
